This 200-year-old Oak tree was needless to say past its best, in fact, it was stone dead. The job was thankfully scheduled in for Gristwood & Toms just before the recent storms, I say thankfully as it is highly unlikely it would have gone unscathed. The tree was in close proximity to the house and also the main road, which needed to be closed off for safety reasons. As an additional precaution, the homeowners were also asked to evacuate the property.

We started the work at 9:30 as soon as we were able to get the road closed. This allowed us a limited window of opportunity to get the tree on the deck and the road back open, so it was all hands on deck. Even then, this was not a job that could be rushed. There were numerous targets around the tree and on the ground including a wall, electric gates, 10 bt lines, and of course the house which was well within striking distance.

Safely Removing Dead Limbs

This tree would have been almost impossible to remove safely through traditional means. The limbs were so dead that the slightest wobble would cause them to break. Attempting to lower them through using a climber in the tree would have been impossible without causing some damage, even with the greatest rigging skills in the world. A crane was the only tried and tested way of safely lifting the dead branches into the drop zone to be cleared by the ground staff. Using the grapple chainsaw on our specialist crane we were also able to avoid the danger of placing a climber in the tree.

After some very careful cutting and maneuvering by Alistair with the crane, everything was safely on the floor. The job was completed well within the time frame and with no damage done to the client’s property.
